Forest Road First Graders Take Part in Mars Challenge

The first grade students at Forest Road School participated in the Mars Challenge in December. The students had to work in small groups to design and build a school on Mars for people who colonize Mars. The students were able to research Mars through SOLE, independent reading, read alouds, videos and whole class research. Leslie Shapiro set up a Skype for the grade level with Jeremy Morton, a man who interned on the Mars Rover. The students had to use everything they already knew and put it with what they learned to design and build a school on Mars. The students were allowed to use cardboard, duct tape, straws, glue and construction paper. The small groups then presented their final projects to the class. The learning, teamwork and creativity was evident in their final projects.
